I’ve been falling behind on the updates.
Dad came over and we dug out the Kwik Way valve grinder. It came from a Ford dealership, that’s why it has the Ford sticker on it
He had the valves looking good in no time. This valve grinder does have the ability to grind the tips of the valves...
Yeah, I was thinking about the stem height. I was curious to see what he planned to do about that when he gets the valves done. He was an Olds mechanic in the early 70s and did valve jobs routinely, so I'm really interested to see him run the machine. Hopefully he still remembers how to do...
I think I’ve figured out what I did that caused the orange peel. Looking at the overall results I noticed that the rockers turned out great while the doors have the orange peel - I believe this means that the fan pattern on the gun was set too broad so it was casting paint too far up and down...
Got the paint sprayed today. The doors unfortunately ended up with a fair amount of orange peal…..operator error I’m sure, but I don’t know what exactly I did wrong. I laid down 2 coats of epoxy primer, 3 coats of base coat and 3 coats of clear. I think it would have turned out better if my last...
Lots of filler, primer and sanding this week, but finally I’m ready to go for final primer and paint tomorrow. Just in time because a heatwave is getting ready to hit us starting on Sunday.
I also made a stand for painting the doors. When I did primer last weekend, I had trouble getting a good...
Today I sanded the second coat of filler I applied last night. After that I got the inside of the doors prepped and painted.
I also got started on masking the the cab of the truck.
I’m hoping to get the bodywork on the doors and cab corner done tomorrow and then primed, ready for paint...
Started bodyworking the doors and cab corner tonight using sanding blocks and paper I bought for Frankensquare and body filler I bought last weekend. It shouldn’t take too long to have it good enough for primer.
You can see the issue in the thread that DieselAmateur linked. I have pasted pictures from his thread below. The hole in the stud is about .200" from engaging the castle nut. The nut isn't short, it just isn't lined up at all. I'm going to shim it with some washers and call it a day.
Got the doors prepped with KBS Klean and Rust Blast so I can start bodywork.
I also got the front shocks and sway bar end links installed.
Spent the time I had left prepping a 6.5 head for another project.
Sorry, no pics….
Yep, they’re Mevotech TTX that I bought off of Rock Auto. To be honest, the unique castle nut and pin arrangement threw me for a loop and the conclusion I came to is that’s how it was supposed to be and the pin was just there in case the nut happened to come loose - that it wouldn't come all the...
Made a little progress today. First I went to the paint store and got supplies for painting the doors, rockers and the cab corner patch.
Next I got the front diff and CV axles reinstalled, which was more of a chore than I expected.
And finally, I cleaned the backsides of the doors off. I...
Today I started working on the replacement doors for the truck. Even though the truck as a whole is pretty rust-free, the bottoms of the doors were pretty roached thanks to the rust belt. A couple years ago I got a couple replacement doors that came from Florida. Even though these doors were...
Finally getting back to this one.
First step was to unpack all of the parts that I had stored in the cab and bed. Once out where I could see them, those got sorted and strategically stashed for while the truck got worked on. I also removed the bed so I could finish the welding on the cab...
A few weeks ago we were on a trip and while driving home the winds were high and there was really bad wind noise coming in the passenger side window. I did some searching and it’s not uncommon for foam seals inside the window trim to fail and allow wind in. This is fixable by removing the trim...
Yeah.....and it probably didn't help that I had ported the heck out of them - causing walls to be thinner.
I'm fleshing out the current plan, but I think I'm close to having it nailed down. It isn't going to be an all-out build because I have a lot of irons in the fire at the moment and I just...
Finally heard from the machinist - they pressure checked the block and it isn't cracked. That's what I was suspecting after seeing how messed up the heads were, but I still wanted to have it checked. More to come......
