Will that also cause compression issues? I thought they were all installed the same. The machine shop should see it if they are.

    Stalling / Smoke

I will post shortly. Basically the key kept the HB in synch with the crank however the outer ring would move about 2 inches or so before catching and turning the crank. Now that I'm thinking about it all the timing components are gears and a chain and nothing there will cause a timing code. If...

    Stalling / Smoke

I think we found the problem. When we pulled the harmonic balancer off to get at the timing chain we noticed the harmonic balancer was broken. It had play in it. So when you start it the pulley moves a couple inches before it catches. It then smokes and stumbles and throws a timing code. The...

My son got the engine pulled yesterday and the pistons out today. He checked the rings and the gaps and they are all within spec. The cylinder walls don't have any scratches / scoring. I had him take them to the machine shop just to inspect them and see if they can see any issues with them.

Got the heads checked and they are good. Spoke the the 6.5 rebuilder at the machine shop and he said the compression difference on each bank points to the rings. They are gapless. There is a chance my son installed them wrong. Out it comes.

No. My son has been doing most of the work. The problem is he just moved to Idaho last week so I'm back to working on it solo. I am thinking about getting a military optimizer take out or if I'm lucky a p400 if they're taking them out yet. Then I'll try and get this one dialed in and put it in...

Smells like fuel. I will test the injectors next.

Just checked the compression. The results are as follows: 1-390, 2-485, 3-430, 4-500, 5-380, 6-490, 7-395, 8-470. All were checked with 8 cranks. Additionally, if you look back at my picture with the deteriorated glow plug, only 1 and 3 are deteriorated. All of the others are like brand new. I...

Look at the pictures of the pistons. Are they upside-down? I'm sure someone would have mentioned it if they were. The reason I ask is there are cut outs in the pistons. I thought those were for the valves? The one valve that hit on each piston is above the cut out and to the left.

Thanks for the offer. My son has one at work that he'll bring home when it is time to reinstall. He has been using what I have instead of his own tools.

    Stalling / Smoke

Good question Will. How can you tell if it's oil or fuel? I didn't smell it. It was white. Didn't get the injectors pop tested.

    Stalling / Smoke

Got the Injectors swapped out and the smoking went away except on start up. If it sits for 5 minutes it will smoke every time. I can turn it off and wait 2 minutes and it starts with no smoke, but wait 5 or more and a big puff of smoke engulfs the truck. There is one code. P0216. That is...

I am having my son reinstall the head to do a compression test on all the cylinders. He told me he used the injector hole so I am having him use the glow plug hole instead. I think the block should be square. The shop I took it to is used by all the local diesel shops in Sacramento and I...

We didn't check the compression on the passenger side yet. We wanted to figure out the easy side first.

The timing dot was off on the time keeper. We used the old timing gear and chain to get it corrected, then replaced the chain w/ the time keeper.
