L will make it work as long as p is connected to the output on the alt. That is how one wire alts work. It's not an accurate system though. Can you take it to an auto parts store and have it tested?
They all have one. Yours may be a different shape.
P pulse, ie tach,
L light, ie warning light, 12v only when the key is on.
F field, don't use.
S sense, 12v from your junction block or starter.
