Doug, in my experience, once a guy knows his way around a these trucks a bit - his instincts as to what the noise is becomes correct 95% of the time.
Lifter tick in these can be a lifter loosing its prime, or a rocker button that has left the chat. But when it’s a rocker button...
The clear line replace the rubber one completely. You will leave it permanently. If you use the clear pvc from hardware stores it will last 3-5 years. Some people add new screw style hose clamps, some dont, I do.
The new lift pumps- the AC Delco EP158 is the best of them. But I have seen...
Not uncommon. My guess is because the scanner sees the cam sensor bleed into the signal in the ecm- cam sensor being in the ds4 of course. Not like GM did some tom foolery there…haha
There is a Hummer mechanic- same engine- he MIGHT work on it for you.
Tor is his name, has a good reputation for quality but some Hummer mechanics only do Hummer, just like some pickup mechanics wont work on Hummers or RVs.
He is in South Jersey

@Boblaw66 if you like, we might be able to walk you through the repairs.
This sounds like one of two issues.
Air intrusion into the fuel system or a lift pump failing.
Stop at any hardware store and get 1/4” diameter clear tubing, replace the 6” long piece coming out the front of the ds4 in...
Ben, normally GM says begin with replacing the 1/4” diameter fuel line that comes out of the front of the ds4 with clear tubing. It is about 6” long in an upside down U shape. You want clear tubing in this location. If you get pvc tubing, it will last about 3-4 years and need replacing...
Doing the unplug one or the other as our Alaskan friend is suggesting is far faster than trying to gather and interpret data, especially if it is any intermittent issue.
I think he is right, jump to that and maybe a go-pro or old phone recording the clear ip line for when it occurs just to...
Yeah, unfortunately the glowshift rankings are high for people they last on and very low for people they fail on. They just seem home run or strike out.
I can’t remember how you ran your hose system from your LP. Do you have the return hose to constant circulation or dead heading into the ip?
Where is the fuel pressure gauge tapped at?
My push is always using a metal T fitting at the ip inlet like gm says. I’ve seen so many rubber hose failures just before the ip that a gauge tapped anywhere else is not trustable. Thats why the gm kit had the adapter there, but it was for a...
Yeah-thats where a permanent mounted fuel pressure gauge thats tapped at the ip inlet and the clear return line being monitored comes into play. I’ve had guys chase an intermittent rough start for years end up tracking it down because the pressure gauge showed a temporary drop in pressure.
Ok. Fuel pressure going to the ds4 should be 8-14 psi. But so long as it has any pressure at all it should start & run.
The clear line - 1/4” diameter about 5” long that is in place for the ip return line-
Please post a pic of it so we see you have the correct location. Having a tiny bubble...
Bolt in cat is far better. Remove it for play time, have it to install when needed. If he added cost of a couple flanges added in is minimal compared to issues that can occur.
No I do not have the part number. @Rockabillyrat might have it or might even have a couple on hand he might sell?
I wanna say 1983-94 6.9 diesel was the years they ran the db2.
I never bought the part myself, I always had a “pump guy” that I could just call in the past.
And same thing this...
