If the CPS is unplugged and it dont start then its the optical sensor.
It does take several more cranking spins but it should start.
I had an optical sensor fail on Me.
After clearing the code it started but just not sudden like it did before.
How about the fuel shut off solenoid ?
That could be getting to the point of enough cycles and is getting close to shorting in the coils.
They dont cost a lot and might be good insurance.
Harbor freight has a real nice diesel engine compression test kit for not a lot of money. It comes in a case with a 💩 load of GP hole adapters.
If it was My wehicle, thats one of the tools I would have setting and ready.
Get one of those sets then run the compression test. Our curious minds is...
Both wires are plugged into the same connector so that would be more of a pass through.
But, who knows what some PO may have done as a cobble up job.
An actual temp sensor would have two wire positions passing through it, or, one wire and the sensor would ne a grounding unit.
I wonder, dont have a wiring diagram, if that yellow wire would be for a kickdown switch to the transmission.

Your exhaust sounds a lot better than what that one does.
