I dismantled the old dash today.
This is all it has for metal framework. There really isn’t much at all. Not sure you’d be that much further ahead with your idea of making a full custom dash by starting with an old dash first.
I added my bluetooth mic to my deck finally while I had the dash apart. I didn't really think about it when I first put the truck together, but then one time I was streaming music and had to make a phone call and then it was an ordeal.... I snaked mine across the dash, up the A pillar and then...
Here’s a close-up of the pod. I’m sure that upper left fit more flush before, but after reassembly things are a little misaligned. I hate taking apart interior stuff - it never goes back together the way it was before.
This corner is the one that has started splitting.
Mine had the factory radio controls there and an EQ/tape deck in the other spot where I have the CD player now. I had seen many people adapting cubbies and fitting 2 gauges there, but I thought I could fit 3 if I really tried. I think I had a cubby to start, but I had to cut so much of it away...
Here’s the post showing that pod I made and with the gauges I originally had in that spot.

I’m inside right now so I can’t take a pic, but here’s the post from when I installed them.

I prefer the 95+ dash, but this style has grown on me. I just use the screen on my phone for GPS, but a larger screen at the upper level of the dash would be nice.
I have a dash that came out of a Suburban at the junkyard that's in good shape. Hopefully it lasts a while. Good to know there are reproductions available now.
Another thing I wanted to try to tackle with the dash out was the dome lamp - everything electrical in the truck worked upon assembly except for the dome lamp. I figured I had wired something incorrectly. I started diagnosing and found poor conductivity in one wire. Eventually I found the source...
I switched direction this weekend and shifted to some interior things I wanted to address. Once I started driving the truck the dash had started cracking quite a bit. It actually started cracking some during assembly, but at that time I didn’t have another dash, but now I do, so this is a great...
Yeah, it's a 4L80e. There's so much info out there, and most of it is for racing, not low RPM diesels, so it's a lot to wade through. I don't even know if these lube mods are necessary for what we're doing, they just seemed like a good idea while I was in there. From what I gather, things...
I stole the transmission I built for this truck to put in my 94 Dually. I reasoned it made more sense for the way overbuilt trans to be in my primary tow pig, rather than this rig, especially considering the build levels of the engines that each will have, at least to start. This is the trans...
My gut feeling is their catalog isn’t correct and they can’t actually get the tone ring. The part I don’t get is why the order hasn’t been automatically cancelled though. Not a big deal, it’s just curious.
Oh, and it’s been 2 weeks since I ordered the speedometer tone ring from Jegs and I haven’t heard anything yet, so I’ll have to call them this week. I’m guessing I’ll just be putting the original one on with Loctite.
I received the seal kit yesterday.
Here are the 3 shift shaft seals I have now. Left to right are: New from kit, New all the catalogs call for (actually for electric shift) and then the new one from the kit. It’s a match.
Here’s a close-up of the original seal:
Here’s a close-up of...
