So, the trailer is overweight currently. Figuring a safe load rating of 10,400 lbs on axles and a 25% weight transfer of 2,600 lbs giving a max trailer weight of 13,000 lbs. Well rolled over the scale to find out the real weight.
As seen in the pic the combined weight was just under 24,000...
Interesting, turns out there's more on the trailer than I thought haha. Combined weight of the truck/trailer/cargo, just under 24,000 lbs. So the trailer is overloaded and that needs to be dealt with.
However that impresses me with the HD to be loaded as it is and handle it well.
Cleaned up...
Went on a fuel run today, bunch of 30+ year old diesel fuel that I've been running for awhile.
HD makes a solid tow rig up to 60mph, cruised at 55mph for most of the trip. Total weight about 18-20k.
Mentioned it before but the factory GM turbo really does make a decent exhaust brake hahaha...
Interesting the difference good suspension makes with trailers. Kinda funny how some people argue with little single axle offroad trailers that no suspension is needed (thought process is lacking on that idea). They all agree good suspension on the vehicle is important, but often forget about...
Spent today mostly just working on the poles and their mounts. Took the steel wire brush to both upper poles so they could fully slide into the lowers. Moved the generator and the compressor to the service trailer as well. Onto the lower snatch block and winch mount
Aux fuel tank is now plumbed in and serves as the main fill spot. Fuel runs from aux tank through a water separator/22 micron filter then into the stock tank. 1 week so far, seems to be working right. Vent from the stock tank is plumbed into the top of the aux tank as well.
Got to start on the...
Yea, I'd love to be down around 2000-2200rpm cruising at 70, but WW is right. With 225/70/19.5"s (32"s), 5.13 gears and .75od from the trans 60mph puts the truck at 2450rpm. Eventually will regear so towing at 70mph will be good but that won't happen until after the engine gets some performance...
Hahaha you're right I can, just being lazy with the fab stuff because the 3500hd is the daily/only driving truck right now and have other priorities first. Got back from an interview on friday, might be going back to work in the Texas oilfield again this summer (fingers crossed) which would be...
Hooray the auxiliary fuse block is wired in. Set up it's + through a relay so the whole thing is only powered when the ignition is on. Lift pump and the brake controller are powered through it. Took most of today since I was being picky about wire routing/loom but it's cleaner and works like...
Forgetting the oil drain/supply parts, intake/exhaust plumbing mods. So around $500-800 total. There's a CKO hx35w on my 82 crew cab with the Isuzu 4bd1t engine for testing purposes.
Yea we did get off on the usual tangent with better turbos haha.
There is 1 nice thing, which is also a bad...
I remember that being the preference when new turbos were first being tested, HX40 and ATT needed 2000+rpm which is an issue with the nv4500. Curious how the new super 54 compares.
No arguement that the ATT, hx35/40, super 54/60, all are far better turbos than the GMx.
Torque coverter doesn't do my 3500hd any good, nv4500hd trans.
Agreed coolers work well. Parts/labor to build the system and doing the mods to the GM turbo (or setting up for twins) would be similar to the cost of a single better turbo, which is essentially bolt on nowadays. My 82 gets the wilder mods, the 3500hd is about cheap/reliable towrig so I won't be...
Freeway speeds with my 3500hd is 60mph, 2450rpm roughly. Those 5.13 gears with overdrive have it gear bound almost as bad as the 82 crew cab with no overdrive hahaha. For a stock 6.5 it pulls those weights quite well.
The truck is currently the daily driver.
Was hoping the responses with...
Agreed there are far better turbos out there which are worth the cost, just looking at $300 vs $800+ (add in studs with new head gaskets, ........). Many threads discussing the better turbos, just want this thread to focus on the GMx turbos for whether that $300 is worth it for a towing...
Yes there are better turbos out there, not the focus of this thread.
Considering upgrading the stock GM turbo on my 95 3500hd for some better performance while keeping it on a budget. The truck is used to tow heavy, between 15k-26k combined weight. Curious if the turbo master and wicked wheel...
For the bed winch? I'd rather have a PTO but that won't happen for at least awhile. Going to use that little 4500 lb mile marker winch in the meantime. The idea has crossed my mind to move the Holmes 500 wrecker to this truck since it has a much stronger frame to handle it.
Varies from...
Had a repair pop up, engine oil cooler lines were beginning to mark their territory so figured replace them with the cooler before the split and take the engine with em. Used Leroy's replacement style hoses/cooler. Hadn't noticed before but the truck has a power steering cooler as well, far...
