Running Too Much Boost, And Blew A Head Gasket.

Thanks Nate. I doubt the porting did anything for my drive pressure, as the turbo is the restriction. I would eventually like to permanently install a drive pressure gauge, but thats going to have to wait until my back pocket gains some weight. :D Matt

No, its not a Provent. You must have missed this thread I ran a couple months ago. http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/threads/a-better-oil-catch-can-maybe.43709/ I look forward to seeing your vid Leroy. Matt

Running Too Much Boost, And Blew A Head Gasket.

Thanks, and now its running as good as it looks. :) The trucks back together, and running fantastic. I got my wastegate turned back down to 18, and I think I'm going to turn the fuel back down on it tomorrow, as she rolls coal a little to easily, and it liked the way it ran before turning up...

Running Too Much Boost, And Blew A Head Gasket.

Made a fair amount of progress today. I still have to finish the exhaust, intercooler piping, and install the glow plugs, as well as a few other odds, and ends. I've already cranked the engine with the glows out, until I had diesel mist coming out all 8 cylinders, so it should start very easy...

best replacement headgaskets for 6.5 turbo diesel

Yes they can, but you have to remove the studs. The ARP studs have an small female Allen head on the end of them for removal, but if you were to use red locktite, you would end up rounding the allen head out before they would come out. Matt

In my research, it seemed to me that most of the people that were successfully running high boost with these engines were running a higher torque spec on the studs, so I figure, why argue with success. :) Matt

I used the ARP grease the studs came with. My assembly lube is more of a really thick oil, and I didn't want to risk having any of the lube travel down the studs, and end up on the head gasket prior to getting them torqued. Matt

best replacement headgaskets for 6.5 turbo diesel

Yep, I'm in the process of finishing that exact job up, right now. http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/threads/running-too-much-boost-and-blew-a-head-gasket.43893/page-5 Matt

best replacement headgaskets for 6.5 turbo diesel

I don'y know Will. If you managed to blow a head gasket anyway on down the line. You'd be pulling the whole engine, just to get the heads off. :D Matt

Running Too Much Boost, And Blew A Head Gasket.

Thanks. :) You bet. I used a step bit, that I chocked up in my drill press, and ground one of the cutting edges off, till it was the right size to just act as a guide. I then used a 3/4" bit to knock the sharp edge off from around the hole, so it wouldn't cut the orings when torquing. Pic...

Well, the heads are on. I torqued them in increments of 40, 80, and finally 120 lbs. I installed all the orings below the studs, and am very happy with their fit, and I have no doubt they will eliminate any chance of coolant getting past the studs. Here are a couple pics. Matt

best replacement headgaskets for 6.5 turbo diesel

Here is a comparison between a Felpro 9521PT +.010, and a cheap head gasket. In the pics below is also a blown cheap head gasket. The place where the gasket is blown is the most common spot on our 6.5's, and as you can see the Felpro gasket has an extra layer of steel in that spot for...

Running Too Much Boost, And Blew A Head Gasket.

When I picked up my Felpro 9521PT +.010 head gaskets today, I noticed a very distinct difference between them, and my old head gaskets, that you can clearly see in the pics below. The new Felpro's have an extra layer of metal in the area between the outer cylinders, and the coolant ports, where...

Running Too Much Boost, And Blew A Head Gasket.

I think I'll leave the 40 psi boost for the Cummins guys. :D I did a couple WOT runs seeing a peek of 30, then I turned down the wastegate to 25, and on my next WOT run, she started pushing coolant, and lots of it! Matt

    A military rebuilt 6.5

That heater hose sure is purdy Nate. Thats a nice looking pile of parts, but my problem is, as the new parts pile gets heavier, my back pocket feels lighter. In fact, sometimes it gets to feeling like there's nothing there at all. :D Matt
