I have a boss who needs to spend time w/his family,at the lake and he has asked me to rebuild a 4l80e transmission in the company truck,[a hardwood floor company in Santa Barbara CA.] I have never done this before however everything seems to have all worked out .up tell getting a new TORQUE converter I haven't had any luck finding the one I need ,he told me today to clean out the old one and run it ???? I would rather tell him I found the one we need .the truck is a Isuzu NPR HD 5.7 l gas /w a 4l80e trans,it has a drum brak on the driveshaft.tag# J HP 98 8 162 and case stamp #24204250 9 / 10828 and a sticker 98/4l80e/24203477 these are on the case.on the converter a sticker #24202 / 991 white sticker looks like may be there was a color on it once.?it is no big deal to do what I have done or to put it in or take it out but it is my resp nsabilty tothat it it works and my rep .I am sure I could clean it out but I don't think that is the right way do do things even though I have done everything else out here in the the dirt.does anyone have any in put that may help

Not trying to be rough but helpful…

Have you ever watched someone plug in a welder extension cord then start climbing out on the diving board to the swimming pool? I mean, besides the above post?

Dude- you are in a world of hurt.
Cleaning out a torque converter doesn’t happen. You can cut it apart, rebuild and weld it back together then balance it. That happens. But if you have to ask and if your boss thinks it can be cleaned out- neither of you have a clue what you’re doing with it.

Imagine you do the best job ever rebuilding the transmission that has ever been done. It’s the perfect tranny, will run a million miles shifting smooth and never drips or gets hot.
Now slap on a converter (or oil cooler) that has a little debris in it. Book goes the transmission. And you look the fool for having done something wrong because of it.
I ran a huge fleet that cycled through thousands of trucks that ran the 4l80e. I have seen this mistake made by different mechanics along the way.
Either the converter is fine or replace it.

Used to be mom and pop transmission shops that would do a flush job on TCs.
I have had that done multiple times and had no ill affects.
Other than that it is up to what @Will L. replied back with.
Put it back in.

Will L. Thank You so much for the response .I will start off by again saying thank you for the input I have read. This whole experience with this NPR has been learning experience I will be thankfully for forever.crap I 'm just a kid who rides BMX and wants to listen ,learn and never let a piece of iron get the best of me.soooo,I won't say my boss would rather be at the lake or some dude ranch on vacation running d h w floors into the .what I will do is tell everyone is that I said sure lets do this ,,,,I had worked for a friend who worked for this company.did a clutch job on a car.was asked hey can you check out this noise ,sure ...your bell housing or case is cracked on the truck ,the driver drives like a nut .doesn't care.anyway inspection plate has been torn off and hanging making noise.so took trans out welded bell housing/case ,then put it back in 3 wks later reverse goes out they said oh ya its been slipping.so since I worked on it last I have now taken full responsibility of this truck .I find out low /rev piston cracked in three .so prob found now clean out rebuild tranny w/"master rebuild kit" what ever but after I was told everything new .and have told the driver hey it's gonna be fine ,boss has all new parts coming so you won't have to drive your new truck into the ground anymore .the boss drops the ball, and now it is my name Ronnie Nunes who is now responsible .cause that's what a man does right?we don't let people down.right?least that I how I was raised ,any my grandpa dead and dad dead ,I don't have anyone else but who responds and or my studies.so thank you . now I will read the rest of the responses, thank you .

does anyone want to sell a torque converter that fits exactly to a 1998 NPR HD 5.7.l gas eng w/ a 4l80e transmission?????????

thank you MrMarty51 for input I appreciate your response this is all new to me ,
Possibly go to a store that sells rebuilt torque convertors and have them send that one in with specific instructions that you have to get that TC back, none other.
Still the possibility of loosing that one but I really dont see any other options.

Ok, I should have said- there is a torque converter flushing machine. Some transmission rebuild shops have them, and are usually trustworthy of doing it right. But it’s a gamble because you pay the labor and cost of fluid, then if it didn’t flush clean enough they will then recommend buying the new converter.
The machine spins the converter like a flywheel while pumping fluid through it and doing a “pulse” for some of it to help clean it out.

If they don’t charge for the cost of fluid, that means they are using old fluid just ran through a basic filter and whatever cleaned the last 20 units now cleans yours.

Sorry, Ive no recommendations where to get parts at for you.
