I have been told the the Cummins 12V had 2 versions ?
the pickup truck unit and a commercial truck unit.

Is there any truth to these claims ?

was there really a 12V-5.9 that came with 250hp/500tq ?

I am trying to dig up some more info on these 12V-5.9L-CTD's for my Studebaker 6x6 project. . . I may have to start building sooner then i had planed on. . .

Stock, no. The highest I have ever seen the 12V 5.9L was 190HP in heavy applications and 230HP in RV's. The 250HP 12V CUMMINS was the 8.3L engine. ALOT of them were made at 250HP in medium to heavy apps. Commonrail engines were offered at 250HP though with the 5.9L.

Ok so the 12V-5.9L 190hp-230hp.
Whats the Torque out put ?

this motor will be going into a 2.5 ton truck i will be towing 35,000LBs-45,000LBs so i need a good strong engine.
I have been doing this with a REO-331 I-6 Gas motor 5spd-DD n 9.00-20's i am going to the 7spd-OD trans n 11.00R20's.
for the extra ply tires and a bit more road speed, to do that i need more then the REO gasser.

REO-331: 130HP n 380 TQ

12V-5.9L: 190hp n ???TQ

I believe the 5.9L in commercial ratings were right around 450-525 on the torque for the 12 valve's. You can swap out the fuel plate in the pump and jump it way up though if it has the P7100 inline pump. For that much weight though, an 8.3L is the way to go.

I agree with you 100% the 8.3L would be perfect but here is the flaw with them.

1. the 8.3L won't rev out enough RPM to gain road speed. the 275-325hp 8.3L max out at 2200rpm the 180-250hp 8.3L maxed out at 2400rpm. so with the over sized tires and the over drive i end up going slower. . .

2. The weight of this motor totally destroys my off road abilitys as the front axle will sink lickity slit on soft ground.

3. the Max TQ of the 7spd is 660TQ the 8.3 runs 900-1200TQ+.

4. it's going to very hard to get it to fit under the hood lots of hacking and chopping.

I was hopping with the 6.72 gears the 5.9L could handle the strain, as the truck isn't loaded very often nor dose it go far loaded that heavy. 85% of its driving life its empty.

A properly built 5.9L 12 valve can do the job, but will have a shorter life expectancy in doing it. I would look for either a 215HP out of a DODGE, or a 230HP RV model. Make sure you have at least a HX35 turbo(or HX40), a larger fuel plate, a set of 370 injectors, and a 4K GSK. That will get you up around 300-350HP pretty easily and reliably.

Wow nice list of Mods. . .

I was only looking for about 225-275hp, I was mainly concerned about the torque i was hopping to be in the 500 zone. . .

225/480 250/500 275/550 those where the types of Numbers i was hopping for but i do like the sound of 300-350hp.

so wher would the torque be with numbers like:
300/??? 325/??? 350/???

Now as far as RPM i am only looking to cruise this thing at 2500rpm on the highway. . .
it should run 69.3mph@2,500rpm in 7th gear OD is what the math shows, but you know how that goes.
it'll prolly be more like 65mph@2600rpm. . .

You'll want at least a 3K GSK in the pump as the stock injection pump falls off pretty flat around 2500-2700. At 250HP you can probably get em up to around 500+ on the torque. The factory fuel plate in the pump SEVERELY limits the torque output of the 5.9L in the DODGE's. That's why the RAM would have 180HP but only 425 or so for torque whereas a medium duty truck would be 160 or 170HP and have 500-525 for torque. Just remember though the 5.9L 12 valve has a pretty narrow torque band in stock form.

What the heck is 3K GSK ??

GSK= governor spring kit. The early 5.9's were governed at 2350, and the P7100 trucks were governed at roughly 2500-2750. Most of them though would begin to de-fuel at 2300-2400 though and lose HP and torque when you need it the most.
